Outskirt’s 12 Favorite Songs of 2012

It’s the last day of 2012 and time seems to be related to Usain Bolt. While we look forward to 2013, we can’t help but feel a little nostalgic. So in honor of the great music year that was, here is Outskirt’s 12 favorite songs from the past year (in no particular order).

1. “Anything We Want” – Fiona Apple

Although it’s hard to pick a favorite from Apple’s The Idler Wheel…, the pure genius evident in the lyrics make “Anything We Want” a standout track.

2. “Money Trees” – Kendrick Lamar

Ok, so “Money Trees” technically isn’t the best song on GKMC, but it is the most addicting (ya bish).

3. “3:16” – Jhene Aiko

This song is classic Aiko: Emo, gorgeous, haunting and perfectly written.

4. “Ruin” – Cat Power

Ms. Marshall got on her soapbox and made us dance at the same time. How does she do it?

5. “Bandz A Make Her Dance” – Juicy J

Just when everyone thought 2012 couldn’t get anymore ratchet, Juicy J dropped a bomb (and Beyonce bought some earrings).

6. “Sweet Life” – Frank Ocean

Ocean said it himself: “The best song wasn’t the single.” Agreed.

7. “Constant Conversations” – Passion Pit

“Take A Walk” may have gotten handpicked by Taco Bell, but “Constant Conversations” was the standout from Gossamer.

8. “Roses” – Nas

Nas poured his heart out on Life Is Good and we loved every minute of it, but we especially loved “Roses.”

9. “Adorn” – Miguel

Miguel came through this year and dropped an amazing single, a great album and even picked up a few Grammy nominations… All while rocking a pompadour.

10. “Liquorice” – Azealia Banks

Banks was all over 2012, so it is hard to choose a favorite song from the Harlem rapper. However, “Liquorice” was delightfully raunchy, especially when we figured out what she was saying.

11. “Do You Know What You Have” – Brandy

Although Brandy’s album came in like a lion and left like a lamb, it was a solid r&b project. The Mike Will Made It-produced track “Do You Know What You Have” was a lowkey highlight.

12. “Aiight” – BJ the Chicago Kid

Probably one of the best, if not the best, slow jams of 2012. None of that electro-dance-pop-r&b stuff here, folks.

There you have it! Thank you for keeping up with Outskirt throughout the year. Have a wonderful NYE and a great start to 2013!

  1. Fiona Apple is fantastic. “Anything We Want”, for me, was one of those songs that took a little time to get used to, but once I listened to it enough, I couldn’t stop. I have yet to check out Cat Power’s new material. Thanks for the reminder.
